Description
Tumor necrosis factor (or TNF-α), also called cachectin, is produced by neutrophils, activated lymphocytes, macrophages, NK-cells, LAK-cells, astrocyte endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells and some transformed cells. TNF occurs as a secreted, soluble form and as a membrane-anchored form, both of which are biologically active. The naturally occurring form of TNF is glycosylated, but nonglycosylated recombinant TNF has comparable biological activity. The biologically active native form of TNF is reportedly a trimer. Human and murine TNF has approximately 79% homology at the amino acid level and there is cross-reactivity between the two species. Two types of receptors for TNF, p55 and p75, have been described and virtually all cell types studied show the presence of one or both of these receptor types.

The clinical use of the potent antitumor activity of TNF has been limited by the pro-inflammatory side effects including fever, dose-limiting hypotension, hepatotoxicity, intravascular thrombosis and hemorrhage. Designing clinically applicable TNF mutants with low systemic toxicity has been an intense pharmacological interest. Human TNF variants, which bind to the murine TNF-R55 but not to the murine TNF-R75, exhibit retained anti-tumor activity and reduced systemic toxicity in mice compared with murine TNF, which binds to both murine TNF receptors. Based on these results, many TNF mutants that selectively bind to TNF-R55 have been designed. These mutants displayed cytotoxic activities on tumor cell lines in vitro, and exhibited lower systemic toxicity in vivo.

Description
trans-Aconitic acid (abbreviated TAA) is the trans isomer of Aconitic acid. As an antimicrobial agent trans-Aconitic acid is used as an antileishmanial to prevent L. donovani from transforming from amastigotes to promastigotes, thus inhibiting the reproduction of the bacteria. In synthesis, TAA allows for the crosslinking of carboxylic acids to create polyvinyl alcohol films that are water-soluble. Found in range grasses at varying concentrations, it inhibits the tricarboxylic acid cycle it may be partially responsible for nutritional disorders in grazing cattle.

Description
trans-Ferulic acid is a hydroxycinnamic acid found predominantly in plant cell wall components. Given its bioavailability it has been used in several studies with bacteria such as Pseudomonas acidovorans and fungi like Sporotrichum pulverulentum for analyzing metabolism and degradation of trans-Ferulic acid. In several different studies the inclusion of trans-ferulic acid as part of a complex was useful for stabilizing or increasing the absorption of pharmaceuticals or vitamins. It has chemical properties that make it both an antioxidant and a metabolite of eukaryotes in plants. For lab applications it is used as a matrix for proteins in MALDI mass spectrometry and as a reagent for the synthesis of vanillin, along with other cyclic molecules. It can also be used to esterify methacrylated dextran and itself can form a polymerize.

Description
Tricine is a zwitterionic buffering agent used in biochemistry and molecular biology that was selected and described by Good et al. It is part of the Tris family of buffers with a useful pH range of 7.4 – 8.8. Tricine is commonly used in SDS-PAGE to separate peptides that are in the molecular weight range of 1 to 100 kDa. It is also used in capillary zone electrophoresis, high performance liquid chromatography and ion exchange chromatography. Tricine was determined to be the best buffer tested for use in ATP assays involving firefly luciferase. Tricine can serve as scavenger of hydroxyl radicals; this should be taken into consideration if using tricine in the presence of an enzyme with oxidase activity. Tricine forms a complex with Cu(II). The addition of Cu2+ to a solution enables tricine to be used in the Lowry protein assay. Tricine can be used as a substitute for protocols that utilize the controlled substance barbital as a buffer.

Description
Tridecyl b-D-maltopyranoside is a disaccharide derivative and glycoside which is applied as a non-ionic detergent and surfactant. In studies on membrane protein crystallization, Tridecyl b-D-maltopyranoside proved to be an effective detergent for maintaining protein solubility but necessitates the presence of salt. Tridecyl b-D-maltopyranoside has a longer chain length than Decyl β-D-maltopyranoside, another detergent used on membrane protein crystallization. Decyl β-D-maltopyranoside has been used in micellar electrokinetic chromatography to study enantiomer separation of drugs.
