Sodium taurocholate is the sodium salt of taurocholic acid, a bile acid composed of cholic acid and taurine. It has many microbiological uses, and is a well-known recipe component of MacConkey agar.

It is also often used to solubilize lipids and membrane proteins, as well as functioning as an activator during studies involving different types of lipases.

Sodium taurodeoxycholate is a bile salt that acts as a detergent and as a differentiating tool. Bile salts break down bacteria that are not native to gut, while enteric bacteria are resistant to these bactericidal effects. It can also be used for isolation of membrane proteins, including inner mitochondrial membrane proteins.

Tamoxifen citrate is an anti-cancer agent and protein kinase C inhibitor. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in human malignant glioma cells and to block VEGF production in breast cancer cells. Additionally, tamoxifen’s effects on radiation sensitivity have been studied. It has been used to analyze steroid receptors on human breast cancer cells and to study triacylglycerol accumulation in the liver. Tamoxifen is an estrogen receptor activator.

TAPS is a zwitterionic buffering agent used in biochemistry and molecular biology that was selected and described by Good et al. It is part of the Tris family of buffers and is useful for a pH range of 7.7 – 9.1. TAPS is commonly used in capillary electrophoresis to analyze DNA and in planar chromatography to separate dyes. It is the preferred culture media buffer used for dinoflagellate experiments, allowing for minimal pH change and maximal growth. TAPS may form a complex with some common metals so stability constants and concentrations should be taken into account when choosing this buffer. TAPS is capable of inhibiting connexin channels in animal cells.

Tazobactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor useful in combination with β-lactam antibiotics to increase their potency. It irreversibly inactivates β-lactamase enzymes, preventing them from degrading β-lactam antibiotics. Tazobactam has been used in combination with piperacillin and a variety of other antibiotics. Tazobactam is less soluble in aqueous solution than tazobactam sodium.

Tazobactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor derived from penicillin. It is used along with β-lactam antibiotics, to prevent their degradation by β-lactamase enzymes. Tazobactam is often used with piperacillin to increase its potency. Additionally, tazobactam is used in studies regarding β-lactamase and penicillinase inhibition.

TCEP-HCl is an odorless reducing agent suitable for protein applications and in the preparation for electrophoresis. TCEP is water soluble, is stable in a variety of solutions and is particularly useful in the labeling of cysteine residues with maleimides, preventing the cysteines from forming disulfide bonds. As a reducing agent, TCEP has many other desirable features.

Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic isolated from Actinoplanes teichomyceticus. It is a mixture of several teicoplanins. Teicoplanin is effective against gram-positive bacteria resistant to β-lactam antibiotics. It has been effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis.

TES is a zwitterionic buffering agent used in biochemistry and molecular biology that was selected and described by Good et al. It is part of the Tris family of buffers and has a pKa that is right at physiological pH (7.4) at 25°C, giving it a useful pH range of 6.8 – 8.2. It is used in various protein assays, in micellar electrokinetic chromatography and in Test Yolk Buffer medium. Like most neutral pH, amine-based buffers, TES forms a complex with DNA; it affects restriction enzymes kinetics more than HEPES, but less than Tris. It also forms a complex with Cu(II) ions. TES is capable of influencing mRNA expression and embryo development. It is suitable for use in the bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay.

Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic targeting gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It also displays toxicity against certain eukaryotic cells. Tetracycline is used in multidrug resistance studies and in cell culture applications as a selective agent. Additionally, it promotes expression of the P450 proteins.

Thiamphenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic derived from chloramphenicol. It is effective against several gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and commonly used in researching protein synthesis and to select for chloramphenicol-resistant transformed cells or the bacterial CAT gene. It can be used against uncomplicated gonorrhea infections and chancroid.

Thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide (often called MTT) is a common dye used in Cell Proliferation assays or Cell Growth assays. MTT is converted to water-insoluble, dark blue MTT-formazan by mitochondrial dehydrogenases of living cells. The intensity of the color can then be measured colorimetrically at a wavelength of 570 nm.

Thiostrepton is a cyclic peptide antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces azureus. It targets a wide variety of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, especially those causing skin infections. It has been used as a marker for selection of recombinant Streptomyces cultures. Additionally, thiostrepton has been shown to inhibit FOXM1, a gene commonly overexpressed in cancer cell lines, thus inhibiting cancer cell growth.

Thiostrepton functions by binding elongation factor G (EF-G) and interfering with ribosomal GTPase activity, ultimately inhibiting protein synthesis.

Thrombopoietin (THPO), the ligand for the receptor encoded by the c-Mpl proto-oncogene, is a key regulator of megakaryocytopoiesis and thrombopoiesis in vitro and in vivo. The cDNAs for THPO have recently been cloned from canine, murine and human sources. The proteins from these three species are highly conserved, exhibiting from 69-75% sequence identity at the amino acid level. Two distinct domains, separated by a pair of arginine residues that may be a proteolytic cleavage site, have been identified in THPO: the amino terminal region exhibiting sequence homology to erythropoietin and the carboxy terminal region containing multiple potential N-linked glycosylation sites. Recombinant THPO has been shown to stimulate the maturation, as well as the proliferation, of megakaryocytes and may have important therapeutic applications for the treatment of various clinical conditions associated with thrombocytopenia.

Tiamulin fumarate is a pleuromutilin antibiotic targeting gram-positive bacteria and several Mycoplasma species. It is soluble in aqueous solution.

Pleuromutilin antibiotics target the 50s ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, by binding peptidyl transferase. This blocks formation of peptide bonds.

Ticarcillin is a carboxypenicillin used to treat gram-negative bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. An alternative to ampicillin it can be used to test the presence of marker genes in bacteria, while preventing the appearance of satellite colonies occurring during the ampicillin breakdown. In plants it kills Agrobacterium used to deliver plant cells. A 15:1 mixture of ticarcillin and clavulanate is commonly called TimentinTM is stronger than ticarcillin alone.

Tilmicosin is a macrolide antibiotic structurally similar to tylosin. It targets gram-negative bacteria, especially those responsible for bovine respiratory infections.

Timentin™ is a 15:1 mixture of ticarcillin and clavulanate. Ticarcillin is a penicillin ß-lactam antibiotic, which is susceptible to ß-lactamase degradation. When combined with clavulanate, a ß-lactamase inhibitor, its efficacy is greatly increased. Timentin™ exhibits high activity against gram-negative bacteria and resistant Agrobacterium species.
