Freelance Scientific Writer and Editor

Job Summary

As a freelance scientific writer and editor, you will use your expertise to write, review, fact-check and thoughtfully edit new and existing scientific content.

This role will allow you to build your scientific writing skills, reaching broader audiences, and making scientific communication more accessible.

The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of good lab practices and have at least 7 years of laboratory and experimental design experience, preferably in the areas of protein expression and purification, molecular biology or cloning.

You must be able to perform meticulous literary research, work both independently and communicate with a team, be comfortable working remotely and have excellent comprehension of English grammar and writing.

If you are a problem-solver, inquisitive, curious, creative and ever-learning, this is the job for you.

This is a freelance role within the marketing department.

Expected Compensation and Hours:

  • $33 per hour
  • Invoiced by the freelancer on the 15th and 31st of each month
  • Flexible schedule with a request to usually work 30-40 hours a week (some flexibility can be built into this)

Qualifications and Skills

  • PhD in molecular biology with an emphasis on protein research and/or cloning
  • At least 7 years lab experience
  • Extensive literary research experience
  • Experimental design experience
  • Thorough understanding and adherence to good lab practices
  • Troubleshooting experience (both in lab, and through literary research)
  • Great with grammar and spelling
  • Comfortable writing detailed protocols
  • Comfortable peer-editing
  • Comfortable using Chat GPT
  • Comfortable learning new skills
  • Able to self-teach
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Experience in Microsoft office
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Ability to think critically and creatively
  • Attention to detail

Bonus Skills (not required, but a huge plus)

  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Understands factors influencing search engine optimization (SEO)

Job Responsibilities May Include

  • Identifying and writing scientific articles, supplementary content, or protocols.
  • Editing scientific content for factual accuracy, grammar, logic, structure, and syntax
  • Content development such as support documents and articles
  • Review previously generated content and revise/update as needed.
  • Perform literature-based research and organize data into charts, tables, diagrams, figures and illustrations.
  • Conduct literature research and maintain an organized reference library.
  • Develop documentation and content for future product release.
  • Use competitor analysis tools to research and develop content strategy.
