Description
Salinomycin is a polyether ionophore antibiotic originally isolated from Streptomyces albus. It transports monovalent cations across biological membranes, disrupting normal ion gradients and altering cellular ion homeostasis. Salinomycin exhibits antibacterial activity primarily against gram-positive bacteria, while the outer membrane of many gram-negative bacteria limits susceptibility.
As the parent form of salinomycin, this molecular biology grade reagent is useful for investigating ion transport, membrane potential, antimicrobial activity, and mechanisms of cellular stress. Salinomycin is also widely studied in cancer biology for its effects on cell viability, apoptosis, multidrug resistance, and cancer stem cell populations, making it useful for both microbiology and cell biology research.
