Animal Free Recovery Medium
GoldBio’s competent cell recovery medium is now animal-free!
Recovery medium is a commonly used reagent for use in transformation with both Agrobacterium or E. coli cells. One of the primary ingredients of recovery media is a peptone called tryptone. Plant-based tryptone works just as well in recovery media and eliminate the safety, ethical, and environmental shortcomings of animal-based tryptone.
Peptones are protein mixtures that have been hydrolyzed, or cut into smaller peptides and amino acids, by an enzyme or by acid. These chopped up proteins serve as a source of nitrogen atoms and amino acids to supercharge cell growth. This support is especially needed in competent cell recovery medium when cells are recovering from stressful transformation processes.
Traditionally, peptones are often sourced from animal origins – such as meat or organs. However, there has been a transition away from animal-based peptides because of a variety of concerns.
For instance, animal-based peptones carry the risk of containing Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE) such as mad cow disease, foot and mouth disease, and even viral infections such as swine flu. Meaning that animal-based peptones can transmit these diseases when they are present. Thankfully, plant-based peptones do not transmit any of these safety risks.
Additionally, many consider plant-based peptones to be more ethical as it eliminates animals being conceived and raised just to harvest them for scientific reagents.
Lastly, plant-based peptones are better for the environment. Whereas animals release carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere, plants ingest CO2 and convert it into the oxygen that we all breathe while they are growing.
Importantly, plant-based peptones work just as well, and sometimes better, than their animal-based counterparts, depending on the particular application. So, when you are using GoldBio’s Competent Cell Recovery Medium, you know that with our animal-based tryptone, our recovery media works just as well as animal-based formulations, and is safer for you, more ethical for animals, and better for the planet – now that’s a win-win-win-win scenario!
GoldBio Animal-Free products will be clearly labeled on the bottle beneath the name.

Description
GoldBio’s GV3101 Agrobacterium chemically competent cells allow you to obtain high transformation efficiency in applications such as gDNA or cDNA library construction. Our GV3101 strain harbors the C58 chromosomal backbone containing rifampicin resistance and the Ti plasmid pMP90 (pTiC58DT-DNA) harboring the gentamicin resistance. A functional T-DNA binary system can be built using our GV3101 strains as the T-DNA region has been deleted in the Ti plasmid and instead has a binary vector containing the missing T-region. The binary system makes possible to transfer genetic material into a host plant’s genome. Our system is often used for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation in mono and dicotyledonous species such as Arabidopsis thaliana, tobacco, potato, soybeans and corn.

Description
GoldBio’s AGL-1 Agrobacterium chemically competent cells allow you to obtain high transformation efficiency in applications such as gDNA or cDNA library construction. Our AGL-1 strain harbors the C58 chromosomal backbone with an insertion mutation in its recA recombination gene. This mutation stabilizes recombinant plasmids. AGL-1 also has rifampicin and carbenicillin resistance genes in the genome useful for selection. A functional T-DNA binary system can be built using our AGL-1 strains as the T-DNA region has been deleted from the Ti plasmid pTiBO542 and instead it has a binary vector containing the missing T-region. The binary system makes possible to transfer genetic material into a host plant S genome. Therefore, our system is often used for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation in mono and dicotyledonous species such as Arabidopsis thaliana, maize, and other plants.

GoldBio CJ236 chemically competent E. coli cells are ideally suited for use in the Kunkel method of mutagenesis. CJ236 cells have part of their Thymine replaced with deoxyuracil in the DNA due to dut- and ung- mutations which prevent the cells from removing uracil from DNA caused by misincorporation or dCTP deamination. CJ236 contains the F’ gene which confers Chloramphenicol resistance.
CJ236 chemically competent E. coli cells are free of animal-derived products and grown with animal-free media.

Description
GoldBio’s AGL-1 (pSoup) chemically competent Agrobacterium cells are optimized for high transformation efficiencies, making them ideal for applications such as cDNA or gDNA library construction. These cells are resistant to rifampicin, carbenicillin, and streptomycin, providing versatility in selection and antibiotic resistance. The Ti plasmid pTiBo542DT-DNA has been engineered to have the T-DNA region deleted, which can be complemented with a binary vector containing the missing T-region to restore the T-DNA binary system function. This feature enables efficient and precise transformation of plant genomes.
AGL-1 (pSoup) chemically competent cells are free of animal-derived products and grown with animal-free media.
The pSoup plasmid present in these cells is required for the replication of pGreen, 62SK, and pGs2 series plasmids, increasing the range of applications for the AGL-1 (pSoup) system. These competent cells are suitable for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of dicots such as Arabidopsis thaliana, tobacco, potato, as well as monocots like corn, making them an ideal choice for plant molecular biology research.
